CHILDREN NEED TARGETED THERAPIES NOW TO KILL THE CANCER AND NOT THE KID:

Children with cancer need treatment breakthroughs NOW. They need new molecular-based targeted therapies that will “kill the cancer, not the kid.” Targeted drugs have proven to be an effective weapon in the war on cancer for adults, and one of the most promising treatments for the future.  

HISTORICALLY, DRUGS USED TO TREAT CHILDREN WERE DEVELOPED FIRST FOR ADULTS.

Nearly all drugs currently used to treat children with cancer were developed for adult cancers and then found effective in children through clinical trials of lower doses.  However, most types of childhood cancer are distinct from adult cancers at the biological and cellular level which is the key factor in developing targeted therapies.   In other words, resources must be dedicated to pediatric research as they never has before. And yet, neither the government nor pharmaceutical companies are devoting resources to pediatric cancer research.

TARGETED THERAPY RESEARCH FOR ADULTS WILL NOT APPLY TO CHILDREN, DUE TO CELLULAR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ADULT AND CHILDHOOD CANCERS

Research on targeted therapies for childhood cancer cannot wait for the approval of drugs developed for adult cancers because those drugs are not applicable on a molecular level.  Due to this molecular distinction, pediatric cancer research must be pursued independently and with it’s own focused research effort.  The benefits of this research WILL be applicable to adult cancers.
